Studio Maternity Session
We get asked pretty much for any session, “What should I wear?” or “Is there anything you would suggest we wear?”, and while I have done this blog post for engagement photos, I thought it would be just as important to do a post on this for maternity sessions. For those of you who don’t know, we are wedding and portrait photographers in Charlotte, NC serving the Carolinas for weddings as well as growing families!
Let’s jump into what to wear for your maternity session.
First of all, it’s important to look at what season you’re in and go from there. We have lots of winter clients/babies, and I think it’s a common trend. When thinking of winter sessions, always keep in mind two things: it’s cold and there isn’t much greenery left. The maternity session featured on this post was shot in winter, and we decided to do half of it indoors in our natural light studio and the other half outdoors in a field, since it doesn’t matter too much about greenery in an open space.
The most common dilemma our moms to be have is choosing between something fitted or flowy, and I have the perfect solution for you: do both! I actually did both for our own maternity session, and I’m so glad I did. With your body ever changing, and you feeling different every day, it’s nice to be photographed in both (if you’re on the fence) so that way when you get your photos back, you have both to choose from!
I also love that the session featured gives you an idea of dark colors vs light colors. I will always be a fan of light pastel colors and textures, so I of course loved Mary Cannon’s blue dress, but I also really love the black dress for the studio! It’s nice to have contrast in images- especially if you love black and white photos.
It’s always challenging writing posts like this because ultimately, I want to encourage you to wear something that you feel your best in, but if I were to give you a few guidelines they would go something like this:
In general, choose lighter more pastel colors to match the style of our photography. Light pinks, blues, creams, whites, and anything neutral looks best with our style of editing. With that being said, if you want something dark or a pop of color, that is totally fine too! Maybe bring one outfit that is lighter, and one that isn’t!
Choose something that flatters you. Take time to look at yourself in the mirror (I know it’s tough to do late into pregnancy!) to see which dresses or outfits flatter your body the best in different angles.
Some moms choose to wear pink if they are having a girl and blue if they’re having a boy, which is a great idea, but not necessary either.
Long flowy dresses photograph well in general
Choose something with texture, not necessarily pattern
Try to stay away from busy patterns or small patterns
